MA Drawing graduate William Luz’s ‘A GHOST SUBJECT (or The Principle of Mutual Enhancement)’ explores drawing in an expanded sense, through video and associated works on paper. He questions whether the act of playing with materials, touching, looking, feeling, or moving can be considered drawing.
This project began with repeated walks to the supermarket and a practice of following desire lines, navigating designed pedestrian paths, enacting journeys using a ‘score’ of shopping lists and indexing/mapping. From an initial interrogation of imposed linear systems and the effects of these in containing her own non-linear behaviour, Heaney has expanded her research to look at art and social reproduction, currently working with the proposition that drawing and domestic work are both subjugated by dominant systems, despite changing attitudes to their status. Using her own relationship with everyday experiences, explored through drawing in its apparent status of ‘handmaiden’ (de Zegher), she aims to critique systems of invisible labour. Researching this theme through expanded drawing practices that characterise domestic work, she is seeking to reveal life as art but also contextualise this within a history of drawing research.
