BA (Hons) Film & Screen Arts

BA (Hons) Film & Screen Arts is a practical filmmaking course where you will explore the craft and aesthetics of contemporary screen-based media, learning the skills required to design and make for film and media production. You’ll study a broad range of approaches to film and media, and investigate the current and emerging techniques used in the global filmmaking industries.

<p>You will explore specialist techniques including cinematography, production design, screen direction, sound production, set-building, lighting design, editing, visual effects, social media production and experimental image-making. </p> <p>You’ll have the opportunity to design and make films, from your initial idea, to shooting and screening, all while considering your work in relation to culture, society and the wider world. You’ll have the opportunity to develop a wide range of projects beyond traditional film, including screen based installations, site-specific cinema, music video, and video art. Led by a team of filmmakers and media producers, all areas of your learning will be underpinned by a rigorous critical and cultural understanding of film in its many contemporary forms.</p>
<p>Our experienced technicians support your practical learning, and you’ll have access to our outstanding facilities including film studios, green screen studios, sound recording and post-production studios, vocal recording booths and foley studio space. Our Multimedia Lab is stocked with a specialist media equipment, including Arri Alexa, Arri Super 16mm cinema cameras, underwater film and photography kit, and much more. </p>

<p>Unique to an independent art and design university, our interdisciplinary curriculum allows you to engage with areas of practice that intersect with film and screen arts including, <a href="">Fine Art</a>, <a href="">Photography</a>, <a href="">Commercial Photography</a>, <a href="">Fashion Communication</a>, and <a href="">Costume</a> through regular university wide workshops and lectures. </p> <p>Our on-site independent cinema, run by Plymouth Arts Cinema, provides the perfect opportunity for you to display your work on the big screen as well as to watch a diverse programme of films, and to engage in specialist film-focused events.<br /></p> <p>You will benefit from our new industry partnership with <a href="" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Real Ideas</a>, gaining access to Europe’s first-of-its-kind immersive dome which features an impressive 19.1 speaker array and 360-degree visuals projecting at 8K resolution; this state of the art facility is compatible with virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality, animation, games software, spatial audio, 360 recorded and live-action content. Film and Animation students have recently created and screened content for the dome giving them firsthand experience of immersive, 360-degree animation and filmmaking.</p>
<p>Recent visiting lecturers to the course include Maria Norman, Head of Production at BBC Natural History Unit, award-winning filmmaker Ben Wheatley, Oscar-winning producer Mia Bays and Production Designer Ed Turner. We have established links with NAHEMI, BFI London, the Royal Television Society and the Aesthetica Film Festival, as well as many independent filmmaking professionals both in the UK and abroad. You’ll have the opportunity to attend international film festivals such as Rotterdam, Oberhausen and Asethestica, where students have screened their own work as well as held panel discussions.</p> <p>Graduates of the course have participated in many international film festivals and galleries, including the Institute of Contemporary Arts, Edinburgh International Film Festival, London Short Film Festival, New York Tribeca Film Festival, and Raindance International Film Festival. </p>
