Artist’s books and works on paper by Judith Noble
Cabinet Gallery, the Library, Arts University Plymouth
Wednesday 29 March 2023 - Thursday 1 June 2023
Artist statement:
These recent works were inspired by my collaborative work with the Inner Space Exploration Unit (ISEU), formed in 2020, when the Covid lockdown followed by an immobilising accident necessitated an exploration of inner, magical landscapes with their genesis in my childhood home in Anglesey, shared with and visited jointly by other members of the ISEU. In 2021 I was able to return to the physical locations that had inspired my inner explorations. These works arose from the resulting mingling of the spirit world and its inhabitants with the everyday; from hauntings, dreaming and states of possession experienced on journeys through remote coastal landscapes. They were profoundly shaped by tidal rhythms and the ebb and flow of geological time experienced in the body and the psyche. They are maps of a place where the otherworld, the dream world and the everyday can no longer be experienced separately, and where the anthropocentric, mortal world is no longer central.
