3D Design Crafts invited to speak at Irish Glass Biennale

From 24-25 October 2019, NCAD host Critical Practices: Making, Writing, Curating, Educating, a two-day symposium investigating the critical contexts of glass art and design practice.
<h5>From 24 - 25 October 2019, <a href="https://www.ncad.ie/">NCAD </a>host Critical Practices: Making, Writing, Curating, Educating, a two-day symposium investigating the critical contexts of glass art and design practice.</h5> <p>Running in conjunction with the<a href="https://irelandglassbiennale.wixsite.com/website"> Ireland Glass Biennale</a>, the event brings together artists, designer-makers, curators, researchers and students, and feeds into the wider NCAD Creative Europe Project: Imagining a Sustainable Glass Network in Europe (ISGNE). International attendees will come together to investigate glass in the context of intangible cultures, design visual and applied arts.</p>

<p>As part of a dynamic schedule of cultural discussion and workshops, Plymouth College of Art’s 3D Design Crafts Subject Leader and Senior Lecturer, <a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/people/gayle-matthias" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gayle Matthias</a> and recent MA Glass graduate <a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/posts/ma-student-laura-quinn-reports-back-on-her-creative-trip-to-gijon" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Laura Quinn</a>, will contribute to an impressive list of guest speakers, including representatives from the V&amp;A Museum, Toledo Museum of Art (Ohio, USA), METHOD Gallery (Seattle, USA), Erasmus University Rotterdam (the Netherlands) and University of Catania (Italy). Following her research paper and solo exhibition <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2076-0752/8/1/16/htm">S-O-T Body Repairs</a>, Gayle’s talk will centre on the intertwining of conceptual and theoretical practice, drawing on autobiographical narratives to influence new approaches to making. Whilst hot off the back of her inclusion in the Crafts Council ‘<a href="https://www.craftscouncil.org.uk/articles/10-to-watch-our-pick-of-this-years-craft-graduates/">10 to watch</a>’ graduate shortlist, Laura will present ‘Materiality as Antidote to Materialism: Exploring how a Glass Craft Practice can become more sustainable through the use of Digital Technologies’.</p> <p>Day one of the symposium takes place at the National Museum of Ireland, whilst day two will take place at the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin Castle Gardens.
