Arts University Plymouth supports Print in Action with Jemma Gunning masterclasses
Thursday, 10 April, 2025 — Celebrated printmaker leads sessions in our Fine Print Studio ahead of Plymouth’s city-wide print festival
<p dir="ltr">In support of Plymouth’s <a href="https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/print-in-action-festival-tickets-1230382269489" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Print in Action Festival 2025</strong></a>, Arts University Plymouth is opening its <strong>Fine Print Studio</strong> to the public and students for a pair of hands-on monoprint workshops with acclaimed printmaker <strong>Jemma Gunning</strong>, in partnership with <strong>Real Art Make Print (RAMP)</strong>, part of social enterprise Real Ideas.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Taking place on <strong>Friday 25 April</strong>, these monoprint workshops offer a rare opportunity to work with one of the UK’s leading contemporary printmakers, hosted within our specialist printmaking facilities.<br /></p>

<p dir="ltr">Jemma Gunning’s prints explore post-industrial and transitional landscapes through expressive monotype and traditional intaglio techniques. Her work is held in major collections including the V&A and the Ashmolean Museum, and she is a member of both the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and the Royal West of England Academy.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Her public masterclass, hosted in the Fine Print Studio at Arts University Plymouth, will explore monoprinting as a fast, expressive process for experimentation with tone, composition, and mark-making.</p>
<p dir="ltr">This workshop is open to all levels and is suitable for both curious beginners and experienced artists interested in expanding their creative toolkit.</p>

<p dir="ltr">On Friday 25 April, students at Arts University Plymouth have been given the opportunity to take part in a free, exclusive printmaking workshop with artist and educator <strong>Jemma Gunning</strong>. Held in our specialist Fine Print Studio, the afternoon session offers a more intimate, hands-on environment for students to explore new techniques, develop practical skills, and connect with Jemma’s creative process.<br /></p>
<p dir="ltr">Now in its third year, <strong>Print in Action</strong> is Plymouth’s city-wide celebration of contemporary printmaking. Organised by Real Ideas via RAMP, the festival runs across <strong>Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 April 2025</strong> at <strong>Ocean Studios</strong>, Royal William Yard.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The weekend features talks, open studios, demonstrations, hands-on workshops and a curated print fair. Exhibiting artists and speakers include <strong>Jemma Gunning</strong>, <strong>Bench Allen</strong> of Jealous Gallery, <strong>Anita Reynolds</strong>, <strong>Ley Roberts</strong>, and collectives such as <strong>Bristol Print Collective</strong>, <strong>Ironbridge Printmakers</strong>, and <strong>CAMP PrintKin</strong>.</p>

<p>We’re proud to see so many members of the Arts University Plymouth community past and present taking part in this year’s <a href="https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/print-in-action-festival-tickets-1230382269489" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Print in Action Festival 2025</strong></a> on <strong>26 & 27 April</strong>, leading workshops, sharing techniques, and celebrating the joy of making. It’s a true showcase of our printmaking talent, with alumni including <strong>Suzanne Drummond</strong>, now our Fine Print Studio technician and a 2024 MA graduate; <strong>Ben Challen</strong> of Jealous Gallery London, who studied Foundation in 2008 and BA (Hons) Illustration & Print from 2009 to 2012; <strong>Lou Holland</strong>, a BA (Hons) Illustration graduate; <strong>Grace Beswick</strong>, who graduated from PDP in 2024; and <strong>Zara McDermott</strong>, BA (Hons) Illustration, class of 2024. They’ll be joined by current students <strong>Ruby Bradshaw</strong> (PDP), <strong>Sam Goodwin</strong> and <strong>Viki Starmore</strong> (both MA), and <strong>Asher Ross</strong> (Graphic Design). Our staff are also getting involved, including <strong>Barton Hargreaves</strong> (Extended BA lecturer), <strong>Sue Lewry</strong> (lecturer in BA Graphic Design and MA Communication Design), and <strong>Matt Holmes</strong> (Fab Lab Southwest technician and lecturer). It’s set to be an inspiring weekend filled with inky experimentation, playful processes and creative community spirit.</p>
