<p>The East Looe Town Trust awarded a prize to the team of students who created the best sculpture, in a competition judged by local contemporary glass artist, Sandy Horton, local abstract painter, James Howe, who worked on the films Blade Runner and Local Hero, and Looe Mayor, Martin Gregory.</p> <p>The prize was awarded on behalf of the East Looe Town Trust to the winning team by John Warne CB, a former Director General at the Home Office and long-standing supporter of Plymouth College of Art’s annual beach sculpture competition and Trustee of the East Looe Town Trust.</p> <p>Sandy Horton said: “The students worked together to create fewer sand sculptures than in previous years, but of much higher quality. However impressed I was by their sand sculptures, I was most impressed by their tenacity in dodging the rain showers and working together so quickly and efficiently with clouds looming on the horizon.”</p>

<p>Helen Markes, Senior Lecturer and Subject Leader for Extended Degrees, said: “The sand sculpture competition has become an invaluable induction tradition for our Extended Degree students, introducing them to one of Cornwall’s most beautiful towns and giving the students a hands-on opportunity to get to know each other while creating art together in public. We’re very grateful to East Looe Town Trust for their exceptional ongoing support, including Maintenance Manager Antony Scarah who prepared the beach immaculately for our competition. The cleanliness of the beach is a credit to the work of Antony and his team, particularly given that we were creating sand sculptures in the same spot that Trevor Nelson was DJing only a week earlier as part of the Looe Live! festival.”</p>
