Second year students from our BA (Hons) Textile Practices degree recently completed a live brief set by Make at 140 to create crafty project kits - find out which students were selected to sell their kits in store.

Second year students from our BA (Hons) Textile Practices degree recently marked an important milestone in their creative studies at Plymouth College of Art, by completing a live brief set by Plymouth-based workshop space and cafe, Make at 140 Vauxhall St.

Located in a beautiful listed building in Plymouth, Make at 140 is a hub for the city’s craft-lovers. The brief, set by shop owner Lizzy, was an exciting eight week long project that challenged students to design and make a kit to be sold through the store.

During the course of the project, Lizzy also ran a tutorial session for each student, looking at their initial ideas for products and how these would then transfer into a kit, taking into consideration pricing, instructions, colour ways, components, branding and the final outcome.

The winner of the brief was chosen both by Lizzy and the general public, with a Voting Evening taking place at Make at the end of January 2018, where the general public were invited along to select their favourite kit.

Each student created a unique display showing off their kits and the final products, as well as a presentation of work that included branding and beautifully shot images of each completed product, giving the public a full insight into their comprehensive projects. Kits included Pom-Pom and Tassel Earrings, Make Your Own Rope Bowls and a Coral Print Messenger Bag.

After votes were cast, the evening event culminated in two winners being announced - with winner Libby Dawson’s Heron, Flamingo and Hummingbird Zipper Bag Kits and runner up Stacey Paramore’s DIY Macrame Plant Hanger Kit being selected to be stocked at Make at 140 in the very near future.

Ella Robinson, Senior Lecturer on the college’s BA (Hons) Textile Practices programme, said, “Along with my colleagues and all of our students, we’d like to thank everyone who came along to the Voting Evening and showed their support for the student’s hard work. I’d also like to thank Lizzy at Make at 140 for hosting the Voting Evening, and for all of her contact with our students.”

Interested in creative study?
