A little about me before we dive in—I'm not only a lecturer at Arts University Plymouth; I'm also an award-winning entrepreneur and artist. I've got a global clientele for my nature-inspired artwork and even won a national competition that helped me launch my own business in luxury homeware and fashion accessories. So, I've been where you are, and I know how hard it can be!

Now, let's get to it. First things first—know your goal. You're probably brimming with enthusiasm but also feeling a bit overwhelmed, right? The key is to figure out where you want to be when you leave university. Your portfolio is your creative fingerprint, so make it speak to your specific audience. And remember, sometimes less is more!

In today's digital world, LinkedIn is your professional playground. Post your work and start connecting with industry professionals. Seek out your favourite brands and the people behind them. Trust me, it's a game-changer. Don’t rush right in with contacting someone too, take the time to engage meaningfully with their content first. That way, when you get in touch, they already feel like they know a bit about you.

And don't be shy—shout about your work! If people don't know who you are or what you do, opportunities won't come knocking. Set up an Instagram account, invite your contacts to your exhibitions, and reach out to those you admire in the industry. You will be amazed how generous people are with their time if you are respectful of theirs.

Standing out from the crowd is crucial. In a sea of creative minds, you've got to make a lasting impression. Think eye-catching CVs, sending physical materials, or even crafting engaging videos. A little flattery and human connection can go a long way.

As you embark on your creative journey, remember that everyone's path is unique. Don't be afraid to talk to people who have walked in your shoes before. Your journey in the arts starts now, so embrace your passion, follow these tips, and you'll be well on your way to a successful and fulfilling career when you graduate from uni.

Inspiration is everywhere and I think it’s important to keep an eye on what others are doing on social media. I’ve collected a few of my favourites to get you started.

Arts University Plymouth lecturer Jason Hirons' #5minutecontext micro lecture series is a great example of how to engage with different topics on social media

Emily Powell’s social media strategy is brilliant and her brand is incredibly bright and colourful so it instantly attracts attention. She really invests in the quality of her photos and videos and shares insights into her life and practice daily. Arts Uni Plymouth MA Illustration grad Sunny Wu’s use of collaborations with big media is also a strong example of how to balance commercial and creative projects. Another great account to follow is our own course leader for Distance Learning, Jason Hirons. He runs theopenartschool, which includes a micro lecture series #5minutecontext on his Instagram account. Jason does a great job establishing himself as an expert with his weekly social media posts, hooking in people with his varied insights.
