From Paris to Plymouth: Commercial Photography lecturer exhibits work

BA (Hons) Commercial Photography lecturer Jane Prior has exhibited work from Paris to Plymouth - and the show will travel to Bath next month as part of a group showcase. Read on to find out more.

Jane Prior, one of the lecturers on our BA (Hons) Commercial Photography degree, recently had the opportunity to exhibit her personal practice as part of a touring exhibition that was launched at Paris Photo Week in November 2018 and is now coming to 44AD Gallery in Bath this June.

The work was exhibited after being shortlisted in the worldwide competition ‘Blurring the Lines,’ which is hosted and curated at Paris College of Art. Jane’s work was selected alongside several other artists to represent the rapidly changing field of photography, highlighting why the medium is so important in helping form new perspectives on society.

Jane recently achieved an MA in Photography and the Book. The work exhibited was part of a larger body of work exploring identity, the self, the notion of childhood and boundaries. Through her photography, Jane addresses concerns of the overdependence on technology, culturally created facades and how these affect the many transitions of childhood.

“My identity as a mother is fundamental to my photographic practice, it is a way of exploring relationships and addressing fears. Through photography, I strive to capture the vulnerability and innocence of youth by considering human interaction and social awareness. The formality of the posing evokes a social awkwardness that preadolescent children have not yet fully resolved, whilst also examining their underdeveloped sense of self and naivety for the wider context of photography. Photography is about capturing and holding a moment, suspending it in time, encapsulating a sense so that it can be valued and viewed timelessly.”

The work, titled ‘Between’, has been part of several touring exhibitions, including ‘Blurring the Lines’ at Paris College of Art, November 2018 and University of the Arts, Utrecht, February 2019. Jane’s work was also exhibited locally at The Arts Institute, Plymouth as part of a collaborative showcase of postgraduate work.

Alongside the exhibition, Jane’s work was also displayed in an accompanying catalogue, alongside participating postgraduate students internationally.

“Being in Paris was a fantastic opportunity for me, exhibiting my work alongside others, showcasing my work internationally has given me the confidence and drive to continue with my personal practice and consider other possibilities in the future.

It was also amazing to see the diverse range of work being displayed, the breadth of topics being addressed and experiences other institutions are instilling in their photographic practitioners. As an undergraduate photography lecturer, I am always interested in the student experience, and being on the other side while studying for my MA, has enabled me to gain a greater understanding and empathy from a student’s perspective. Exhibiting alongside other photographers from world-wide institutions has given me the opportunity to discuss photography from a wider context and consider how this might impact on my teaching practice.”
