Shaun Williamson
BA (Hons) Graphic Design

Shaun Williamson is a graphic designer driven by a passion for people and a desire to achieve change through his work. Joining Plymouth College of Art as a mature student, he feels that his own struggles with ADHD, dyslexia and anxiety have driven him to strive towards greater empathy for others and to attempt to respectfully understand differences.

Through his design work and thinking, Shaun explores ways in which everyday life can be improved for people who might have lost direction. For the Degree Shows 2018, Shaun created Silent Signs, in response to his observations of how communities respond to situations that require personalised attention. Using graphic design in Silent Signs as a medium to communicate, Shaun aims to encourage debate, discussion and mutual understanding, and to encourage greater empathy and understanding of the differences and strengths of individuals.

Shaun said: “Unlike most awareness-raising campaigns, Silent Signs is aimed primarily at employers. I want to help build awareness for employers to stop, think and act. To look for telltale signs that their employees might have a hidden disability and not jump to conclusions if there are changes to their behaviour or dips in the quality of their work. Before studying at Plymouth College of Art, I’d never have dreamt that I had to the power to change people’s outlooks, but with the skills that I’ve developed, I’m optimistic that my campaign can make a difference.”

Since the opening of the Degree Shows, Shaun was promoted from the position of Graphic Designer to Studio Manager at Purple Motion, a Plymouth-based marketing and design agency offering web design, branding, SEO, social media management and graphic design to prestigious clients including Ocean BMW & Mini.

Let's Survive: A meteor from Joe Deno on Vimeo.

Joe de Noronha
BA (Hons) Graphic Design

Joe de Noronha is a graphic designer who specialises in creating motion graphics. During the course of his degree at Plymouth College of Art he has interned with the motion graphics team at BBC South West and has led motion graphics workshops for first and second-year BA (Hons) Graphic Design students.

For the college Degree Shows, Joe has created a motion guide on How To Survive The End Of The World. Satirising the serious tone of conventional ‘how to’ videos, Joe’s guide juxtaposes the serious and the absurd, combining flat motion graphics with a comedic voiceover.

Josh Silvester
BA (Hons) Graphic Design

Josh Silvester is a designer in multiple disciplines, with specialist skills in graphic design for fashion and fashion editorials. Originally from the island of Guernsey, Josh was a practising graphic designer before coming to Plymouth College of Art, but has developed a new creative identity due to the freedom offered studying BA (Hons) Graphic Design at the college and the opportunities for interdisciplinary working and collaborating with students on other programmes.

In 2017 Josh designed the branding, identity and fashion lookbook for graduating BA (Hons) Fashion students at Plymouth College of Art, collaborating with fashion graduate Hannah Joce to develop a look which she went on to exhibit in London at Graduate Fashion Week 2017. For the 2018 college Degree Shows, Josh collaborated with Hannah again, this time to create the fashion brand KamEfla3, which they launched in a packed city-centre event and describe as being “about standing out, not blending in.”

Speaking about KamEfla3, Josh said: It’s like they said you know, ‘he knows his claret from his beaujolais’. Our brand is a platform for the individual, it screams identity and self-expression through our unique artistic style and monochrome prints translated onto streetwear fashion. Fashion and Graphics come together to present a lifestyle, translating the mundane, distorting stereotypes, using fashion as a platform without limits, a surface that screams pure identity.”

Read about graduating graphic designer Laura Scott's 1940s themed brand The Compton

Find out about disruptive video-mapping with graduating animator Jamie Knight
