For this project, the college’s marketing team went to The Agency with a live brief to design the original marketing concept for the 2019 Degree Shows. The Agency advertised this brief to students from across the college, leading to five BA (Hons) Graphic Design students, Elena Ruiz Ballestero, Sam Hubert, Brad Sandford, Maha Taher and Lisa Hocking, all pitching their ideas directly to our marketing team.

The eye-catching end results are now being rolled out across our website and social channels as well as advertising in print and online media, and for all promotional material and signage for the shows.

Elena said: “When I was invited to pitch a concept for the Degree Shows branding, I knew that I wanted to represent Plymouth College of Art as a utopian environment where all different artistic disciplines merge together. Using a colour palette inspired by the Bauhaus, which was another utopian environment for artists, I deconstructed our building into its composite shapes, to create a striking design that encapsulates my feelings about the college. I’m very happy with the end result and thrilled to see my designs applied in so many different ways to promote the Degree Shows.

“I’ve always wanted to be a graphic designer. In Spain I worked in a variety of editorial roles for magazines including Bricomania, Musica si, Tiempo, and Viajar. I loved seeing the work of our designers and knew that this was the kind of role I wanted to train for. Five years ago I relocated to Plymouth with my family, which has given me an opportunity to study what I love. I’ve learned so much during my degree already. I intend to join a graphic design agency in the UK after I graduate, because I love the collaboration of working in an agency environment.”

Amanda Duffin, Programme Leader and Senior Lecturer for BA (Hons) Graphic Design, said: “Elena developed a bold and impactful concept for the brief, delivering all of the assets that were needed to roll the campaign out across wayfinding and signage, print advertisements and a dynamic package for digital channels. The speed and clarity with which she contextualised and developed the concept show how much she’ll have to offer in an agency environment in future.”

Visit the Degree Shows from 15 to 20 June 2019.

See our Pre-Degree Shows from 14 to 21 June in our Palace Court campus.
