High Demand for Saturday Arts Club

Plymouth College of Art will be running an additional 15 week Saturday Arts Club following on from the huge success of the 30 week programme.
<p>The current Saturday Arts Club is at full capacity with a growing waiting list; the additional 15 week course has been introduced in response to this demand.</p> <p>Students currently studying on the programme recently showcased some of their work, produced as part of the painting course with Xiao Bai Li, at the V&amp;A Museum in London. The project involved painting interpretive self-portraits onto cardboard boxes, with some amazing results. Xiao Bai is a popular teacher within the arts and will be teaching traditional Chinese brush painting on the new programme.</p> <p>"Students working with Xiao Bai have an excellent opportunity to produce unique work. He is well-loved in local schools and we are so pleased to have him teaching on Saturday Arts Club." - Rosie Gibson, Young Art School Coordinator.</p> <p>Registration is now open and the course will commence 2nd February 2013, with 4 hour sessions each Saturday. The students cover different subject areas each year. In Spring 2013 these will include:</p> <p><strong>9 - 11 year olds</strong></p> <p>The 9 – 11 age group aims to provide a fun and informal forum for self-expression and experimentation in the arts. Students are encouraged to explore the subject matter in free form. “Provides a great learning environment where children learn creative arts and grow in confidence” – Parent of Saturday Arts Club student.</p> <p>This 15 week programme will cover 5 weeks in each of the following:</p><ul><li>Ceramics</li><li>Printing</li><li>Film &amp; Video</li></ul><p><strong>12 - 13 year olds</strong></p> <p>The 12 – 13 age group concentrates on developing their work in a more sophisticated manner. In some subject areas students will be able to shape their own direction through interpretations of subject briefs, thus providing an individual slant to their final outcomes. “It has really broadened his skills and appreciation of the different art mediums” – Parent of Saturday Arts Club student.</p> <p>This 15 week programme will cover 5 weeks in each of the following</p><ul><li>Fashion</li><li>Glass</li><li>Photography</li></ul><p><strong>14 - 16 year olds</strong></p> <p>The 14 – 16 age group work in a more sophisticated manner, developing practical and conceptual skills, with greater freedom to interpret subject briefs. With an emphasis on practical subjects, students will gain experience using specialist facilities and will produce a range of work that will be a suitable portfolio for application to FE courses. Previous students found the programme gave them “improved confidence, independence, creative and social skills.”</p> <p>This 15 week programme will cover a new subject every 5 weeks.</p><ul><li>Printing</li><li>Photography</li><li>Painting</li></ul><p>The Saturday Arts Club is a great way to introduce young people to art practices they don’t have access to elsewhere. Students can try their hand at glass work, learn to hand build ceramics or develop photography techniques. The programme also provides a strong foundation for future learning as well as developing social skills and confidence.</p>
