Makers HQ: New fashion company seeks Chair of the Board
Makers HQ is a new joint venture between Plymouth College of Art and Millfields Community Development Trust, which will create a unique and visionary company that will provide cut, make and trim services to the fashion industry, with a strong focus on ethical, British manufacture.
Once home to the Jaeger factory, Plymouth’s heritage in fashion and textile manufacture is something that Plymouth College of Art and Millfields Trust wish to celebrate and evolve, reigniting the fashion manufacturing sector in the area, and reimagining how a fashion factory can drive economic and community regeneration.
Makers HQ is an exciting opportunity to bring together academic institutions, businesses, designers, makers and the community to creative a sustainable and innovative business model.
The project looks to drive regeneration through job creation, graduate retention, innovation in fashion manufacture and training opportunities that are situated at the heart of the community.
Makers HQ are now seeking an independent chair to steer their board of directors and the executive team through the first three years of start-up. They are seeking individuals with a commercial background in business start-up and scale up activity with a proven track record of creating and evolving sustainable businesses.
Successful applicants will need to have experience operating at board level with excellent negotiation and communication skills, and will hold ambassadorial responsibility for the organisation to promote its work and seek partnership opportunities acting as a figurehead where necessary for press and publicity purposes.
Hannah Harris, Director of Development at Plymouth College of Art said, “We are looking for someone with infectious enthusiasm who will set the tone for the organisation.
“We are looking for someone who understands the importance of impartiality and possesses the skills necessary to draw out the skills of the board so that it functions effectively and to its full potential.”
Makers HQ is a Community Interest Company so the successful applicant will need to have good awareness of and appreciation for the importance of being a business driven by social purpose. This role is offered as a voluntary, non-remunerated position.
