Prospectus 2020/21: behind the scenes of our innovative new design

We worked closely with London-based design studio Templo to design this year's prospectus for undergraduate applicants, where we aimed to push the boundaries of a traditional prospectus and run the college’s ethos through the publication.

Working with London-based design studio Templo, we have created a prospectus that not only highlights the courses on offer at our university-sector institution but also showcases a commitment to sustainability.

Templo have previously worked with United Nations, Disaster Emergency Committee, and Amnesty International among many other clients - proving themselves as a collective of creatives dedicated to promoting good causes.

The final design for this publication was heavily influenced by the college's ten-point manifesto, which is underpinned by the college’s DNA; social justice and creative learning.

“We wanted to push the boundaries of a traditional prospectus and somehow run the college’s ethos through the book,” says Pali Palavathanan, creative director of Templo.

He added that the publication was designed to allow users to “playfully interact with the DNA of the College—‘Creative Learning' and 'Social Justice’”, using fore-edge printing techniques. This means that the pages bend backwards to reveal these slogans, meaning each page drives the points forward in simple text alongside a wealth of considered imagery.

Made from fully recycled materials including the rubber bands, which are made from recycled car tyre inner tubing, the prospectus is another example of the college's drive for a sustainable future.

Professor Andrew Brewerton, Principal at Plymouth College of Art, said, “We believe that high-quality creative education for life is the catalyst for personal, professional and cultural transformation. Social justice, through community impact and social mobility, and creative learning, through pedagogical innovation, are part of our DNA and at the heart of everything that we do. Which is why we’re pleased to be working with TEMPLO, who share our values and are helping us to communicate this vision.”
