Staff and Alumni to show off work in Drawn to the Valley open studio scheme

See the work and workspaces of glass technician Amy Whittingham as well as college graduates Jenny Ayrton, Moira White and Ali Goodworth as part of Drawn to the Valley this month.

Artists, designers and makers are regularly given the chance to show off their final pieces of work. From paintings to sculptures, animations and games, films, photographs and more, exhibitions, galleries and shows allow art enthusiasts endless opportunities to see an artists’ finished product.

But it’s far more rare for artists to be able to show off the work behind their art.

Drawn to the Valley aims to bring together over 100 artists, designers and makers from the south west to open their studios to members of the public – giving them a glimpse behind the scenes into their work. And a number of college staff and graduates are delighted to be taking part.

Glass technician Amy Whittingham, Contemporary Crafts alumni Jenny Ayrton and Moira White, and recent Illustration graduate Ali Goodworth are all working together to open up their workspaces to members of the public.

“We want to share our practise with other people,” Amy said.

“Lots of pieces of art are really beautiful and clean but the process is often messy – and you don’t get a chance to see that in the final piece. It’s a really interesting opportunity.”

The artists will be based at Jenny’s family home (postcode PL7 4NX) from 23rd to 31st August, 10am til 4pm – using her dining room, garage and studio to show off work-in-progress and also host demonstrations as part of Drawn to the Valley.

“We’ve been before and have been inspired by artists sharing their exhibitions and studios and we just thought, why not go and do it ourselves,” Jenny said.

“And there’s the nosey side of things. You get to have a nice piece of something that most people don’t usually see.

"And you also get to meet and chat to the maker about their work, the process, and their inspiration.”
