What's On in Plymouth - June 2023
We’re halfway through the year already, how on earth has that gone so fast? To help you make the most of the summer in Plymouth, here’s our What’s On guide for the month of June.

We explore new horizons and push the boundaries of creative practice, encouraging students to think of themselves as professionals from their first day on campus. Each year our annual showcase offers students the opportunity to celebrate the culmination of their hard work whilst propelling them into the creative industries. Are you an LGBTQ+ identified writer who would like to meet other LGBTQ+ writers and write in the community? Join us on a Sunday morning to keep your writing practice regular. After introductions at the beginning, the rest of the time is for writing - whether you want to chat during or at the end is up to you! Some people may come only to write, some to share their work, some to read and some to swap their work for praise or critique.
As part of the celebration of French cinema and music at Plymouth Arts Cinema, they are hosting a one-off screening of beloved classic Amélie followed by a live music performance taking you on a journey into 100 years of French music from Offenbach to Gainsbourg. Bursting with imagination and having seen her fair share of tragedy and fantasy, Amélie is not like any other girl. As she grows up, she becomes a waitress in a Montmartre bar. One day, she discovers that her goal in life is to fix up other people’s troubles by influencing their destinies. Dressing up is encouraged for the occasion, the live band will be giving away a CD to the best costume or outfit!

Our Open Days are a chance for you to explore Plymouth and our Pre-Degree campus at Palace Court, and to get a feel of what life’s like at an independent arts university in Britain's Ocean City. Explore our state-of-the-art facilities, speak to our course leaders and talk through any questions you might have with our knowledgeable staff. We have representatives from Student Finance, Admissions, Student Support and the Student’s Union on hand throughout your visit.
Royal William Yard’s popular Good Food & Craft Market will be taking place inside the iconic Melville building and surrounding area outside. Enjoy the freshest local produce from the South West’s top suppliers and unique arts and crafts by artisan makers, while also having the opportunity to explore one of the Yard’s oldest buildings.
The Box’s ‘People and Place’ exhibition features a selection of paintings that document scenes of Plymouth over the last 400 years. Come along for a whistle-stop tour of some of the key works on display, including those by Stanley Spencer, Jack Pickup, Nicholas Condy and Julius Olsson.
Sixteen Plymouth artists are coming together for ‘One Night Only’ at Leadworks in Stonehouse, with a special talk on Robert Lenkiewicz and live music throughout the evening. Bar and fresh baked pizzas are available to order. Free entry and all welcome!

‘Here we go again’ with another one of The Box’s popular Silent Discos! Come and dance the night away in a truly unique setting underneath the Royal Naval ships’ figureheads. This time there’ll be three different channels for you to choose from featuring a brilliant selection of upbeat tracks, as well as songs linked to famous musicals.
A 5k for everyone, the Plymouth Race for Life is thousands of people uniting with one purpose - to raise valuable funds for life-saving research. The 5k route starts and finishes on the picturesque Hoe promenade, adjacent to Smeaton’s Tower and provides fantastic views of the sea and a great atmosphere.
The Plymouth Plant Festival is an event celebrating plants and plant-related businesses in the city, while raising funds for movements within the city that are flourishing green spaces for our local communities. There’ll be bespoke items for sale, free activities and educational talks catering to plant enthusiasts and anyone looking for a fun day out. As well as promoting sustainability and educating attendees about the benefits of plants, with it’s diverse range of activities and vendors, there’ll be something for everyone to enjoy.

The Class of 2023 Summer Shows are taking place throughout the summer
Plymouth Hope Festival is one of the city’s largest multicultural events, bringing together communities from across the South West. The festival includes art, culture, live music, food from around the world, face painting, bouncy castles and a football tournament.
The huge display case in The Box’s ‘People and Place’ exhibition contains over 300 items from their decorative art collection, including ceramics, contemporary craft, Plymouth Porcelain, silver and textiles. Armed Forces Day is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to come along and show their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community from currently serving troops to reservists, veterans, cadets and their families. There will be parades, displays, interactive activities, choirs, live music, military bands, the formidable Field Gun Competition, thrilling military displays and a number of ‘villages’ showcasing the most impressive, interactive military equipment and vehicles from the past, present and future.
Rana Begum (b. 1977) is a London-based visual artist whose work explores the relationships between light, colour and form. Following presentations in Warwick, London and Dubai, her beautiful ‘Dappled Light’ exhibition visits The Box this summer. From sculptures created from brightly-coloured reflector tiles, to works inspired by the time Begum spent at a residency in St Ives in Cornwall, to a beautiful large-scale ‘cloud burst’ installation; this is an exhibition that will draw you in, inviting you to see and appreciate detail and scale at the same time.

Enjoy a major new exhibition for Summer 2023, that celebrates the 300th anniversary of the birth of famous portrait painter, Sir Joshua Reynolds, who was born in nearby Plympton St Maurice. The exhibition will explore the career of this famous 18th century portrait artist within a global context, highlighting themes such as image, identity, his studio practice, his early career in Plymouth Dock (now Devonport) and his use of pigment, colour and light.
