Why Attend A Virtual Open Day?

Tuesday, 15 December, 2020 — As the world adjusts to more flexible and digital ways of working, networking and socialising, universities are offering a wider range of virtual experiences than ever before. Here are a few reasons why attending a virtual Open Day is a beneficial, engaging and useful experience.

Our Virtual Open Days are just as attentive, informative and personable as our on-campus Open Days. Although attending one of our physical open days or campus experience events is ideal for getting a real feel of what it’s like to study with us, booking onto one of our virtual events will still give you a clear insight and understanding into how our creative community is run. Our virtual events are efficient in providing an overview of <a href="https://www.plymouthart.ac.uk/courses">our courses</a>, opportunities and <a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/about-us/our-campus">facilities</a> while giving you the chance to explore our amazing spaces through our informative <a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/visit/book-a-tour">campus tours</a>. These events are convenient and cheap with no need to travel, and you can experience our campus from the comfort of your own home!

Our incredible light-filled Craft, Design & Fabrication building houses our Material Lab, which is fully equipped for cold and hot glass working, metalwork, and plenty of space for ceramics.

Will I be able to see what the campus is like?

A physical Open Day will give you the opportunity to move around the campus in real life, whereas a virtual Open Day allows you to explore our buildings through our <a href="https://www.plymouthart.ac.uk/virtual-tours">360 virtual tour</a> and live video tours. Seeing the college through a digital platform gives you a glimpse into the amazing creative spaces we have here at Plymouth College of Art, and allows you to explore each studio and workshop in your own time.

Our Animation Studio is well equipped with 25 x PC Computer Workstations with 4K monitors, Dragonframe Animation Digital Compositing Software and the full Adobe Creative Suite.

Can I still explore the workshops and studios?

The photos and <a href="https://www.plymouthart.ac.uk/stories?orderBy=lft">videos</a> we have on our website showcase the creative spaces in our studios and labs, and on a <a href="https://www.plymouthart.ac.uk/open-days">virtual Open Day</a> you can have a real-time viewing experience that mirrors what you would see in person. Viewing our facilities through one of our virtual open days provides you with the opportunity to hear first-hand from our studio technicians and our current students who use our industry-standard facilities on a daily basis.

Looking to carve out a career in film, tv or photography? Our industry-standard studio spaces include an infinity cove, green screen, and specialist sound studio, plus a stop-motion suite, darkrooms, and plenty of individual edit suites, all up-to-date with the latest industry-standard software.

Can I ask questions about the course I'm interested in studying?

A virtual Open Day will help you learn about how your course is structured and assessed. This information will be important when you are deciding which course to study or which university to study at. Learning about the course structure gives you insight into how the course is taught, the modules you will undertake, and the work that is expected from each student. It also gives you the chance to hear more about our amazing industry connections, meet our expert lecturers and hear about some of the projects our students have worked on.

Our students regularly exhibit work at industry showcases including New Designers in London, with support from our experienced academics and the Careers team. This is an opportunity for you to get your work in front of some of the sector's biggest names, all searching to recruit the freshest talent for their businesses.

What sort of career can I expect to go into after I finish my creative degree?

At Plymouth College of Art we provide our students with a wealth of exciting opportunities that support their professional development. Attending one of our virtual Open Days will give you insight into these opportunities, with our <a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/careers-enterprise">Careers</a> team on hand to chat about industry experience, exhibitions, global internships, the chance to carry out work experience with our gallery team, Student Ambassador roles and much more.

Whilst you might not be able to meet face to face just now, you can still get some one-to-one time with the actual lecturers on the course you're interested in, so you can ask them any questions you might have about the course or the college itself.

Can I still meet students at an online Open Day?

Although you can find out a lot of information on university websites about courses and student life, attending a virtual Open Day gives you the chance to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/PlymouthCoA">hear from current students about their experience</a>, along with what you can expect. It also allows you to ask academics themselves what the course entails. You may have some anxieties about meeting our lecturers and asking them questions but doing this virtually gives you the option to speak to our friendly team via a chat box rather than talking to them in-person or through a mic. Hopefully through doing this, you will be more comfortable and confident when meeting our lecturers in person as they are all super friendly and helpful! Not only will attending one of our virtual Open Days let you understand more clearly what our expectations of our students are, but it will also get you thinking about what you can expect from becoming part of Plymouth College of Art’s creative community.
