Ethan Pennell

Ethan Pennell graduated from Plymouth College of Art with an MA in Creative Practices for Sustainability, awarded with distinction.

“The course was a life-changing experience, enabling me to develop my practice in a variety of ways. Although primarily a painter and illustrator, my tutors encouraged me to explore other mediums, leading to a rich, experimental two years of study that incorporated conceptual, 3D and sound art.”

Ethan was given the opportunity to present papers about his practice at the Crest Symposium and the college’s Making Futures Conference in 2013, as well as being awarded the 2014 Plymouth College of Art Sustainability Prize. Furthermore, Ethan received a college bursary to attend the Dartmoor Arts Summer School’s storytelling course, which has, alongside the conference experience, done wonders for his public speaking and helped shape his future plans.

Ethan’s work draws upon environmental issues, folklore, new materialism, storytelling and the Western Esoteric Tradition.

“It focuses on the spirit of place and the need to find another way of perceiving the relationship between the human and the nonhuman in the face of the current ecological crisis, one that honours the interconnection between all things.”

Ethan is working on a number of art projects, including writing and illustrating a children’s book on ecological destruction and the importance of trees. Currently Ethan is also preparing a proposal for a PhD in Performance Art that incorporates many of the themes referred to above. See Ethan's website here.
