Steve Bancroft
Lecturer

Steve is a lecturer on the BA (Hons) Commercial Photography and BA (Hons) Photography degrees at Arts University Plymouth.

Prior to lecturing – after finishing up a Photomedia degree at Arts University Plymouth in 2002 – Steve landed a job at a publishing house who were creating market leading extreme sports magazines. He cut his teeth in the advertising department designing copy for clients before nudging his way onto the editorial team as a staff photographer on the internationally best selling Ride BMX Magazine. He spent a good few years in that role shooting and writing over 1000 pages of bicycle related content from across the world.

A stint as assistant editor gleaned Steve valuable experience in photo editing and commissioning content from creatives, and it wasn’t long before he was elevated to the editor’s chair. He spent the next 4 years leading an international team of contributors in conveying his vision of BMX culture to the magazine’s 40,000 strong monthly readership.

Succumbing to a collective creative itch, Steve and three colleagues took the ultimate leap in publishing and started their own independent magazine: The Albion. The print project ran for 18 coveted issues before being mothballed a few years ago. Having enjoyed the challenge of nurturing upcoming photographic talent while working in industry he made the logical move into lecturing.

Alongside his teaching practice Steve is the marketing manager for a C-Skins, a market leading surf brand making performance wetsuits for surfers. Duties in the role include planning, shooting and commissioning visual material for seasonal ad campaigns and ensuring the brand is represented inline with its core values across all marketing channels. Drawing on this rich experience helps ensure the Commercial Photography course is aligned with current industry practice.
