Arts University Plymouth’s KEF5 results sit alongside major new initiatives that expand opportunities for enterprise and knowledge exchange. The university has relaunched Fab Lab South West as the region’s largest Fab Lab and a hub for digital innovation, entrepreneurship and education, and evolved its enterprise pathway into Workroom Grow (incubation for graduate creative business founders) and Workroom Create (paid alumni access to specialist facilities). These initiatives strengthen the graduate start-up pipeline and broaden access to facilities, reinforcing the impact recognised in KEF5.

Ian Hutchinson, Director of Development & Partnerships at Arts University Plymouth, said: “KEF5 recognises the distinctive contribution that a specialist arts university makes to its city and region. Arts University Plymouth’s strength in graduate enterprise and local growth reflects our commitment to creative education with real-world impact, helping graduates to turn ideas into businesses and supporting partners across Britain’s Ocean City and the South West.”

Graduate enterprise: KEF5 records a Very High (Q5) result on the graduate start-ups metric. The combined CPD & graduate start-ups perspective is High (Q4) overall. This aligns with Arts University Plymouth’s focus on creative entrepreneurship, mentoring and access to specialist facilities that help new ventures launch and grow. Other recent enhancements include Workroom Grow, formalising incubation for alumni founders, and Workroom Create, widening alumni access to specialist facilities.

Local growth and regeneration: The university’s high engagement score (Q4) reflects sustained collaboration with regional partners, skills programmes and support for SMEs that contribute to Plymouth’s cultural and economic life. Although this perspective moved from Q5 to Q4 year-on-year, it remains two quintiles above the arts-cluster average, also reflecting the trend of a one-quintile decline in the wider Arts Specialist cluster, demonstrating resilient place-based impact. The relaunch of Fab Lab South West strengthens regional innovation capacity through rapid prototyping, low-carbon design and industry collaborations.

How Arts University Plymouth compares: Arts University Plymouth meets or exceeds the arts cluster average in six of the seven KEF perspectives; working with the public and third sector remains a priority for growth.

Ian Hutchinson said: “Through funded programmes, specialist labs and mentoring, we connect people, place and partners. From Fab Lab pathways to business incubation, our knowledge exchange activity gives founders and SMEs the skills, facilities and networks to prototype, test and grow. We will use the KEF5 insights to deepen collaboration with businesses and the public and third sectors.”

Conversations with Princess Yachts continue as the project moves from pilot to a longer-term model.

The Knowledge Exchange Framework highlights different strengths across the sector rather than producing a single league table. In KEF5, research-intensive universities perform most strongly on intellectual property and commercialisation, while specialist and modern universities feature prominently for graduate start-ups.

The Times Higher Education analysis names institutions such as Birmingham City University, De Montfort University, Falmouth University and Arts University Bournemouth among those in the top quintile on the graduate start-ups metric, alongside Arts University Plymouth. This places the university’s strengths in line with peer specialists and modern universities with recognised enterprise performance.
