Inspired by a childhood spent on the water, Plymouth College of Art alumni Jenny Ayrton's whimsical glass artworks have been selected to be showcased at London Glass Blowing this summer. Read on to find out more.

Plymouth-based artist and Plymouth College of Art alumna Jenny Ayrton has been selected to show her new glass artworks in an exhibition at London Glass Blowing this summer.

Established by Peter Layton in 1976, London Glassblowing was among the first hot-glass studios in Europe. The studio has a reputation as one of Europe’s leading glassmaking workshops with a particular flair for the use of colour, form and texture.

Alongside other members of the Contemporary Glass Society (CGS), Jenny will show work inspired by “an object of personal significance” for a juried exhibition titled ‘Inspired’ from 31 May to 15 June 2019. Many of the country’s foremost glass artists will be presenting dynamic new and original pieces, and Jenny is thrilled to have been selected as one of the first artists to exhibit in this show.

Jenny said, “As artists we all have spaces that we aspire to see our work in, and established artists who we would love to exhibit alongside... this is one of those dreams come true, and I can't wait to see my new pieces in this exhibition!"

An alumna of Plymouth College of Art’s Applied Arts programme (now 3D Design Crafts), Jenny has continued to develop her whimsical glass artworks since graduating. Each piece she creates is designed to tell a story, and at London Glass Blowing, Jenny will showcase new blown glass designs that she has been developing with master glass blower Richard Glass.

Each piece begins with a delicate wire model which is encased between layers of molten glass; these are then cut and engraved. Jenny creates tiny copper and pewter boats and buoys which are attached to the surface to complete the scene.

Jenny’s new series of blown artworks are inspired by a childhood spent on the water. This was followed by a short but varied career working afloat, with positions ranging from harbourmaster coxswain to crewing on a superyacht.

In 2007 Jenny returned to the UK to work at the Yacht Haven Marina at Mountbatten, enrolling on the Applied Arts course at Plymouth College of Art in 2009.
