'There’s nothing that the students can’t do here.' Lord Mayor impressed during visit to our studios
The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Dr John Mahony, visited the college last week to meet students and try out some of the specialist facilities available in our Craft, Design and Fabrication workshops.
As part of the tour, the Lord Mayor visited our costume studio, FabLab Plymouth, printed textile design and surface pattern workshops, jewellery studios and glassmaking facilities.
During his time here, the Lord Mayor met Principal, Professor Andrew Brewerton, BA (Hons) Costume Production and Associated Crafts technical demonstrator, Beth De Tisi, and BA (Hons) Printed Textile Design and Surface Pattern lecturer, Emma Gribble, who demonstrated traditional silk screen printing techniques.
The tour ended with a visit to Glass Studio Coordinator Lawrence West, who gave the Lord Mayor an opportunity to blow hot glass before reflecting on his time at the college.
The Lord Mayor said of the visit, “It was around 13 years ago when I first visited Plymouth College of Art, for the Summer Show, and I’ve always loved coming back.
“Touring the college today, when I watched the way that things were printed in the FabLab and then saw some of the stunning jewellery that was created as the end result of those 3D moulds, it was amazing.
“There’s nothing that the students can’t do here. The college has really put Plymouth on the map in its field internationally and there’s still so much potential for it to continue to grow.”
