Our People
Dave Symons
With a background in traditional photography, graphic design and sound engineering, Dave is part of our technical team, providing support for students across all of our courses.
Dave provides support for students working on traditional analog/film photography, helping with any technical requests or issues, from shooting to developing film. Dave also helps provide advice and guidance on any audio related projects that students might be working on, as well as running photography workshops, keeping the equipment in our studios up to date, and working behind the scenes in our Equipment Resource Centre (ERC), procuring, maintaining and repairing kit.
Dave studied for an OND (Ordinary National Diploma) in Photography at Falmouth School of Art (now Falmouth University), an HND (Higher National Diploma) in Media and an Advanced Diploma in Media at Plymouth College of Art & Design, specialising in multi image photography. He also holds a Professional Qualifying Exam (PQE) from the British Institute of Professional Photography (an internationally recognised qualifying organisation with experience in supporting and networking professional photographers since 1901), an Advanced Diploma in Media from Plymouth College of Art, and a City & Guilds in Sound Engineering.
In his spare time, Dave has played in a range of local bands, from playing bass and percussion for 6 piece psychedelic dub/reggae outfit Dubclass, to playing bass in punk rock band Secrets and Lies. Dave has also produced abstract light shows for live music events and raves, using multi-layered projectors to create psychedelic visual effects in real time, that he describes as “drumming with light”.
