Ictis

Last updated July 2026

For 'Ocean' Bridgette Ashton developed a new sculptural work, Ictis, based on Plymouth Sound’s Drake’s Island. The work draws on the island’s history, which dates back to the first century BCE, and engages with the varied accounts that have shaped its cultural significance over time. It reflects on how different interpretations and retellings have contributed to complex and sometimes unreliable narratives surrounding the island and its heritage. Through this focus, Ictis highlights the ways in which historical records and storytelling continue to influence contemporary understandings of place and identity.
