Increasing neurodiversity awareness through a community of practice

Last updated May 2026

ALDinHE Neurodiversity/Inclusivity Community of Practice (CoP) presented a wildcard session to introduce the set up of their group, raise awareness of their resource bank (hosted on the ALDinHE website) and promote future work. The group draw on the University of Edinburgh’s definition of neurodiversity, beginning with strengths-based descriptions of common neurodivergencies (dyspraxia, dyslexia, autism and ADHD), and recognise that an awareness of neurodiversity is important for all educators as there has been an increase in the number of neurodivergent students accessing Higher Education in recent years (HESA, 2022). Participants of the session had the opportunity to reflect on their individual knowledge of neurodiversity, their institution’s training on neurodiversity and how they might benefit from access to additional training and/or resources.
